Dr Scilla Elworthy

Founder of the Oxford Research Group, Peace Direct and Rising Women, Rising World
Speaker, March 8th 2017

“A different future for all of humanity is possible, if humans wake up. Waking up starts with you and me. It means increasing our knowledge of ourselves by using reflection, mindfulness and inner work.“

Dr Scilla Elworthy is a distinguished activist for peace and has worked on peace related issues for over 30 years. In 1982 she founded the Oxford Research Group, dedicated to researching defense-decision making and developing an effective dialogue between nuclear weapons policy-makers and their critics. For this work she was nominated three times for the Nobel Peace Prize and awarded the Niwano Peace Prize.

In 2002 she co-founded Peace Direct to fund, promote and learn from local peace-builders in conflict areas, leading to the acceptance by the UN of the value and cost effectiveness of ‘locally-led’ initiatives. It was named the “Best New Charity” in 2005.

She received her Diploma in Social Sciences from Trinity College, Dublin and a Ph.D in political science from the Department of Peace Studies at Bradford University. She is the author of “Pioneering the Possible – Awakened Leadership for a World That Works”.
